Morocco : Release all Rifain political detainees

By CMA, AmazighWorld.org
Date : 2020-08-09 15:49:00

On 30 July 2020, on the occasion of the "Throne Day", around twenty Rifain political prisoners, arbitrarily detained for more than three years in Moroccan prisons, were granted a "royal pardon" and released.

The Amazigh World Congress (CMA) congratulates those released and their families and reiterates its full support for them, but refuses to allow this release to be granted in the name of a "pardon" as this would mean that the Rifain prisoners were guilty. However, they were all innocent and had been convicted without just cause in unfair trials. If justice had been served, no Rifains should have been arrested or imprisoned because they had only participated in peaceful demonstrations in 2016 and 2017, during which they had only exercised their right and freedom of opinion and expression recognized by Moroccan and international law.

In view of this, CMA considers this wave of releases of members of the popular movement of the Rif to be an admission by the Moroccan Government of having committed a grave injustice.

The CMA also recalls that more than twenty members of this movement are still in prison, some of whom have been sentenced to twenty years in prison without any valid reason. CMA therefore once again demands their immediate and unconditional release.

The repression of the Rifain popular movement is absurd and unacceptable. It represents a bleeding wound for human rights in Morocco that must be urgently healed by releasing all Rifain prisoners and by repairing the heavy damage they and their families have suffered.

The CMA calls on the National Council for Human Rights and organizations for the defence and promotion of human rights in Morocco to mobilize strongly to secure the release of the last group of Rifain political detainees and thus put an end to the dramatic abuse that their continued imprisonment constitutes.
